Food Allergies vs Food Intolerance

I just wanted to post a quick note regarding the differences between food allergies and food intolerance. The dietary focus of this site is to promote healthy insight and recipes for those with an intolerance for dairy, gluten, sugars and starches. I apologize if I have used the word ‘allergy’ to describe what is actually an intolerance, not directly affecting the immune system.

If you or your child has a food ALLERGY, the reaction to a particular food will be immediate and could present life-threatening results. Most people are familiar with the serious affect foods such as strawberries, peanuts or wheat may have on people with an allergy for these foods.

However, a food INTOLERANCE has to do with the body breaking down the food, and it can often take the body weeks or days to present obvious symptoms. This type of food sensitivity is often difficult to diagnose due to several factors including food combinations, unlabeled ingredients on packaged foods, and the way each body reacts to the intolerance.

I am not in the slightest suggesting any of my recipes are safe for those with food allergies. You may use some of the recipes or digestive health information at your own risk. Perhaps some of the foods and supplements can help strengthen the immune system, but these are choices you are to make with your doctor.

The information in this site is intended to help individuals and parents whose children have food sensitivities primarily due to enzyme deficiencies. To the best of my knowledge, most of the foods and supplements listed are safe for those with gluten, sugar, and starch sensitivities. Some, of the recipes contain milk or cheese, but if you use homemade yogurt that has been fermented for 24 hours, none of the recipes which call for yogurt contain lactose.

I hope this clears up any misconception that the information on this site is geared towards food allergies.

Happy New Year!
